Darrelle Revis Weighs In On Trade Rumors

Peter King of SI.com tweets that the Jets would want “at least” a first-round pick in return for CB Darrelle Revis.

King adds that Revis is going to want “franchise-QB money.” Given the fact he’s coming off of ACL surgery and the cap restrictions that NFL teams are currently faced, King seems to think the Jets are going to have a hard time finding takers.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that a source has informed him that Jets HC Rex Ryan isn’t a fan of the idea to trade Revis.

Jason La Canfora reports that league sources have informed him that the New York Jets are exploring the idea of trading Pro Bowl CB Darrelle Revis.

La Canfora’s source mentioned that Jets owner Woody Johnson has “strong reservations” about the possibility of reaching an agreement on a long-term deal with Revis and is reportedly hoping to secure some value in return for him now rather than risk the possibility of losing him during free agency in 2014.

La Canfora adds that the Jets are most likely looking for draft picks in terms of compensation for Revis.

Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports reports that “at least” two NFL teams have contacted the Jets regarding Revis. Cole adds that Revis’ contract could be a hangup given that it specifically states that he can’t be franchised after the 2013 season.

Revis, 27, is set to make $6 million for the 2013 season, which includes a $3 million roster bonus. Revis is under contract through 2016, but he can void his contract after the 2013 season. It’s worth noting that Revis’ contract includes a clause that prevents them using their franchise tag on him when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. The Jets would incur a $9 million cap hit by trading him in the coming months.

If Revis hits the open market in 2014, La Canfora believes Revis could secure a contract close to that of Mario Williams‘ six-year, $96 million contract that includes $50 million guaranteed.

Clearly, the Jets have serious cap issues to deal with and Revis represents their best trade chip at this point in time. This would be an obvious indication that New York is prepared to begin the rebuilding process, while freeing up some much needed financial flexibility.

Revis is coming off of a torn ACL, which is an obvious concern, but it’s rare to see a player of Revis’ caliber get traded while in his prime. However, few teams are in as bad of shape as the Jets are in terms of their salary cap, so they’ll have to consider all of their available options at this point in time.

Teams in need of help at cornerback would include: the Lions, Chargers, Buccaneers, Raiders and possibly the Eagles given that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will be a free agent.
