Report: Jets “Eyeing” QB Josh McCown, Michael Vick Unlikely To Be An Option For Them

Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News reports that the Jets are “eyeing” Bears free agent QB Josh McCown.

  • Mehta adds that the Jets view McCown as a “viable alternative” to Geno Smith is case he regresses in his second year in the NFL.
  • Mehta believes McCown should be able to find “serious interest” from a handful of teams on the open the market this year, but the Jets think he would be a quality backup quarterback for them.
  • Shifting gears a bit, Mehta also reports that Michael Vick is “unlikely” to be an option for them, even though some have connected the dots between Vick and former Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg who is now with the Jets.
  • Mehta’s sources added that Texans QB Matt Schaub wouldn’t be interested in being Smith’s backup next season.

The Jets are still expected to part way with Mark Sanchez in the coming weeks as he has a $2 million roster bonus due in late March.

Last year, McCown basically resurrected his career after Jay Cutler went down with an injury. He completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 1,829 yards to go along with 13 touchdowns and just a single interception.

It will be interesting to see what kind of market he has in the coming months.

We have both McCown and Vick listed in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
