Report: Jets GM John Idzik Involved In Early Coaching Search

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Jets GM John Idzik is currently involved in preparations for the team’s ensuing coaching search that will get underway after the season.

Head coach Rex Ryan is expected to be fired, which should come as no surprise, but Idzik’s name has also come up as someone who could be on the outs in New York.

At least for now, Idzik is reportedly helping to get the process of finding a new head coach started.

It’s worth mentioning that some of La Canfora’s sources have mentioned that owner Woody Johnson could still fire Idzik, as this would help his chances of landing a big-time head coaching candidate. However, others were surprised to hear that Idzik was involved at all in the in the pre-vetting stages of their coaching search.

Johnson and Idzik are reportedly preparing lists of candidates and “sniffing around” on certain potential candidates.

According to La Canfora, the Jets are not currently working with a search firm, and Johnson, Idzik and team president Neal Glat are instead handling the process of finding a new head coach.

La Canfora mentions that Seahawks coordinators Darrell Bevell and Dan Quinn and 49ers OC Greg Roman could be potential options for the Jets given that they either have ties to Idzik or, in the case of Roman, is someone that’s highly thought of by the general manager.

For what it’s worth, La Canfora expects the Jets to be one of the more appealing jobs available next year.

It will be interesting to see if Idzik is given another opportunity to get things turned around in New York.
