Report: Jets Plan On Exercise DE Muhammad Wilkerson’s 2015 Option

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, reports that the Jets will exercise the 2015 option included in DE Muhammad Wilkerson‘s rookie contract.

  • Mehta adds that the Jets recently spoke to Wilkerson’s agents regarding a long-term contract, but two sides aren’t close to an agreement.

Wilkerson, 24, will make just $1.2 million for 2014 season, so he is clearly in line for a massive contract after getting off to a great start to his NFL career.

The 2015 option will run them $6.969 million for the 2015 season, which is a very reasonable salary for a player of his ability. Plus, it’s not guaranteed, so they could always release him in the event that he suffers a catastrophic injury.

In his first three seasons in the NFL, Wilkerson has totaled 116 tackles, 18.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and an interception.

The price of top-tier defensive ends continues to climb, so it will be interesting to see the contracts handed out to the 2011 class of pass rushers including J.J. WattAldon SmithRobert Quinn and of course Wilkerson.
