Jets Back In The Market For A QB In 2014?

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York, the Jets could be looking for another quarterback this offseason unless Geno Smith picks up his game during final games of the season.

After a disastrous performance in Week 11 the team decided to bench Smith and go with Matt Simms. Since then, there have been calls for Simms to remain the team’s starting quarterback.

The Jets used a second-round draft pick on Smith earlier this year, but it’s exactly unprecedented for a team to use two high draft picks on quarterbacks in back-to-back years. The Panthers used a second-round pick on Jimmy Clausen only to take Cam Newton with No. 1 overall pick the following year.

There will be options available in the free agent market as well, but it’s hard to rely on free agency when you need a quarterback. The most notable free agents are Jay Cutler, Michael Vick and Josh Freeman.

All things considered, there is still time for Smith to get things turned around and clean up game before the offseason is underway. Benching him for the remainder of the season would be admitting that they failed by taking him in the second-round. A more patient approach seems more likely. Unless of course Smith continues to regress.
