Report: Jets Unlikely To Fire Rex Ryan Or John Idzik Midseason, Still A Chance Ryan Is Back In 2015

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that it’s highly unlikely that the Jets will fire HC Rex Ryan or GM John Idzik during the regular season.

“What I am told is owner Woody Johnson will assess this situation in its entirety after the season,” Rapoport said Sunday morning. “So what will this hinge on? I’m told there is no litmus test as far as saying, ‘Rex needs to make the playoffs and then he’ll be able to keep his job,’ even though his contract actually triggers with a playoff appearance. Because there is an acknowledgement in the organization that there’s just not as much talent as they thought there would be — certainly not as much talent as they had last year.”

Many expected this to be Ryan’s last season with the Jets given how much they have struggled in recent years, but it appears as though there is still a chance he could be retained for the 2015 season.

Rapoport adds that it was Idzik’s call to not spend their $20 million in available cap space during the offseason as he reportedly did not believe there was a worthy investment to be made during free agency. The decision reportedly did not come from owner Woody Johnson.

Ryan’s tenure in New York started off strong but has really fallen off in recent years. Even with the poor performance from his recent Jets’ teams, many believe he could secure another head coaching job if he were to be available next year.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing plenty about Ryan and the Jets in the coming months.
