Report: Jets Will Not Offer Rex Ryan A Multi-Year Extension

Ian Rapoport and Kim Jones of the NFL Network reports that the Jets will not give Rex Ryan the long-term contract extension he is reportedly seeking next year.

Instead, the Jets are willing to give him a one-year extension that would keep him under contract, through the 2015 season.

According to the report, Ryan believes the team will use this as motivation to win next season. Ryan’s staff will remain in a “holding pattern” with regards to their contracts.

At the very least, Rex could hit it big with a great 2014 season. It appears as though the Jets are concerned about committing a coach long-term who has been on the hot seat in recent years.

It’s hard to blame any team for being cautious in this type of situation. Handing Rex a multi-year extension now could leave them in a position where the fanbase is demanding change and they would now have to pay two coaches.

Video has been circulating online Monday showing the Jets locker room as owner Woody Johnson announced that Ryan would be back for another season. Clearly, the players are very high on Rex.
