Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle, citing a source with “inside knowledge of the team” reports that Jim Harbaugh’s “act” has worn thin with some key “face of the 49ers” type players.
Killion mentions that these issues are unlikely to develop into a big problem while the team is winning. However, she believes a few losses “could expose a widening rift” within the team.
This is just the latest report regarding issues involving Harbaugh and the rest of the 49ers’ organization. Harbaugh’s contract situation has already developed into a big offseason story line, and it doesn’t appear to be going away any time soon.
A separate 49ers source tells Killion that even if the two sides were to reach an agreement a new contract, there would “probably only buy peace for a few weeks before speculation started up again.”
“That’s just who Jim is,” said Killion’s source. “He’d probably like to redo his contract every year, just out of competition.”
San Francisco has maintained that an extension for Harbaugh is a priority for them this offseason, although they are expected to wait until after the draft before addressing the situation. That can, of course, change, but you really have to wonder whether or not this could be his last season with the 49ers.

Neither of the harbaughs are worth a crap. It is always some one else’s fault things did not go right for them.
Harbaugh, along with Parcells, and Belichik are royal pains in the asses, not a doubt about it. They also have something else in common, they take whatever talent they have and shape it into a winner. Your options are having Jim Schwartz, or Bill Caldwell, or the next guy on the list and they will send you a Christmas Card along with a present on your birthday. All is great until you just suffered through another 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the 3rd straight year. The other option is a hiring a head coach that doesn’t even know it’s Christmas your getting no card. Your birthday, forget it, he doesn’t even know his own. All he does is think about his football team and getting them to play together and win. They don’t think like the rest of the coaches in the league, they are competitive to the point of being a maniac. These guys ego’s are bigger than the stadium they play in, there abrasive, don’t excuse themselves when they belch and are not fun to be around. Word to the management of the teams these guys coach, just sit back let them do what they do, and they’ll surely make you look good, unfortunately they’ll remind you regularly of that point so you have to check your ego at the door. There aren’t many coach’s like them, but only one team get’s a trophy each year so there doesn’t need to be many of them. Belichik had probably his finest season, or I’ll say he did the most based on his talent level, the Patriots cupboards were bare this season on both sides of the ball. Yet he took that team to the AFC Championship Game with Brady and nobody else, he had a pathetic roster yet they didn’t miss a beat. That’s why you put up with these guys.
Cut him loose, and he’ll have a job the next day. Doubt that the 49ers are going to do that.

If all Harbaugh wants a new contract every year, then renew his contract every year, when he has a bad season do to injuries or what ever, then don’t renew his contract. If he wants to screw with his future instead of the 49’ers legacy, let him, lets see how much of a team player he is versus his players. Personally I’d let him go to the Browns, he’d only be there for a year anyway and who would care, as long as the 49’ers got 2 first round picks for 2 years. The prestige of being the 49’ers head coach might even get Gruden out of retirement and I really haven’t cared for the 49’ers since the Bill Walsh days. Once Walsh retired really lost interest in them anyway.
I’m so f’ing glad the Browns didn’t pull that Harbaugh deal. I mean I like him and wouldn’t mind having him as the coach of the browns through normal head coach searching. But trading for the guy and likely having to give up multiple picks, probably a good portion of our whole draft…would have been an unmitigated disaster. The 9’ers would have replaced him with another high level coach within a week who would have that current roster plus the Browns first couple rounds? Are you kidding me? Whatever was responsible for submarineing that deal the Seahawks should be thankful for.
Harbaugh didn’t say he wanted a new contract every year. Coaches like Harbaugh don’t grow on trees. Maybe you’d like to bring back Mike Singletary. He turned this team around on a dime. If they let him get away they’ll regret it. You can bet on that.
