Report: Jon Gruden Talking To Tennessee About Head Coaching Job, Offering $10M Per Year

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that the University of Tennessee is interested in hiring Jon Gruden as their next head coach.

According to La Canfora, Tennessee views Gruden as a “top target” for the job and have discussed the matter with him.

La Canfora adds that a deal for Gruden would be worth upwards of $10M per season with another $8M per year set aside for his coaching staff. If Gruden were to take the job, La Canfora mentions former Volunteers quarterback Tee Martin as the top candidate to serve as a chief recruiter for Gruden.

Gruden’s name is connected to multiple jobs every year and sources close to Gruden have told La Canfora that they believe he would prefer to land an NFL job if he is to return to coaching. Beyond that, Tennessee boosters are skeptical a deal will get done with Gruden, according to La Canfora.

However, the Tennessee job has a particular allure to him and his wife.

Numerous reports have said that a potential return as Buccaneers head coach is something to watch, depending on what happens with Dirk Koetter (NFLTR).

Gruden, 54, began his coaching career with the Raiders back in 1998. He was actually traded to the Buccaneers in 2002 after years in Oakland.

During Gruden’s 11-year coaching career, he posted a record of 95 and 81 (.540) to go along with four division titles and a Super Bowl Championship with the Buccaneers.

We’ll have more regarding Gruden possibly returning to coaching as the news is available.
