Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that Cowboys backup QB Kyle Orton has informed the team that he would like to retire.
According to Rapoport, Dallas has told Orton that they would prefer to have him back for another season.
The Cowboys reportedly view Orton as one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league, and would like to see him participate in their upcoming training camp.
Rapoport adds that in the event that Orton does decide to call it a career, the Cowboys will force Orton to pay back the $3 million signing bonus he received a few years ago.
Dallas signed some extra quarterback depth this offseason when they brought in Brandon Weeden and Caleb Hanie. There is no question they would prefer to have someone with more experience playing behind Tony Romo, who underwent back surgery at the end of last season.
In 2013, Orton stepped in for Romo after he suffered a season-ending back injury. Orton threw for 358 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in a loss to the Eagles.
