Report: Lions Could Have Interest In Trading Up For WR Sammy Watkins

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports that there is a “growing sense in league circles” that the Lions could be willing to trade up for Clemson WR Sammy Watkins.

  • Birkett mentions that Lions’ GM Martin Mayhew and HC Jim Caldwell have already had dinner with Watkins.

The Lions reportedly spoke to fellow Clemson WR Martavis Bryant regarding Watkins as well.

They just asked about how we got along and stuff like that,” Bryant said of the interview.

Ian Rapoport reported earlier in the day that Lions Vice Chairman Bill Ford Jr was at the team’s facility on Tuesday and did meet with Watkins during his visit.

  • Rapoport previously mentioned that there is a “really strong” connecting the Lions and Watkins.
  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Clemson WR Sammy Watkins will workout for the Rams on Monday.

The Lions hold the No. 10 overall pick, so it would almost certainly require a trade for them to be in position to land Watkins. The Rams and Raiders have both been rumored to be interested in trading back, so this could be something to watch.

Detroit signed Golden Tate to a long-term contract last month, but it would make for a very impressive receiver tandem if they were able to add Watkins to their offense.

We have the Watkins going to the Browns at No. 4 overall in our most recent 2014 NFL Mock Draft.
