Report: Lions Could Make Sweeping Changes In The Near Future

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Lions coaching staff “think and fear” that they will be fired in the coming days.

  • Rapoport adds that the Lions front office including GM Martin Mayhew could be out as well.
  • The two sides are reportedly “barely talking,” which Rapoport refers to as a “big issue.
  • Bill Ford Jr. is reportedly making the call as to whether or not there is a change with coaching staff and front office.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that league sources have informed him that Lions ownership remains “on the fence” regarding HC Jim Schwartz’s job status but are “leaning towards keeping him.

As for speculative options for the Lions should they part ways with Jim Schwartz, Mike Silver expects the Lions to target an offensive minded coach and specifically mentions that 49ers OC Greg Roman “would be very, very interested in this job.”

Penn State HC Bill O’Brien’s name has been brought up as a possible option in the past, but it appears as though he’ll either take the Texans job or remain in State College.

Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt and Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell could also be guys to watch in the coming weeks as their names have been connected to potential head coaching jobs as well.
