Report: Lions Willing To Allow DT Ndamukong Suh To Test Free Agent Market

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network is reporting that the Lions want DT Ndamukong Suh to sign a deal that he’s happy with and are willing to give him the opportunity to test the free agent market.

This comes just a day after Lions president Tom Lewand told reporters that they are tabling contract talks with Suh until after the 2014 season.

The Lions are in a difficult position regarding Suh given that using the franchise tag on him would create a cap figure of over $36 million next season.

Should Suh reach free agency, he would have no shortage of suitors and the bidding could produce some massive figures.

Suh, 27, entering the final year of his rookie deal and is in a great position to secure a huge contract extension that will once again set the bar even higher for the defensive tackle position. Suh stands to make $11.55 million for the 2014 season and has a massive cap figure of $22.4 million, so a new contract would easily offer them some cap relief.

Last year, 48 tackles, 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble for Detroit. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 2 defensive tackle in the league last season.

We have Suh listed as the No. 2 player in our Top 25 – 2015 Free Agents List.
