Report: Monte Kiffin Unlikely To Return to Dallas Cowboys

Ian Rapaport of the NFL Network reports that it would be “very surprising” if Cowboys DC Monte Kiffin returned to Dallas in 2014.

  • Rapoport adds that a “retirement package likely coming” for Kiffin.

Kiffin, 73, told reporters following Sunday night’s season-ending loss that he has no intention of retiring. Owner Jerry Jones also reiterated Kiffin has offered no indication that retirement is a possibility.

A change wouldn’t be at all shocking given how dreadful the Cowboys defense was in 2013. The Dallas defense closed the season ranked No. 30 against the pass and No. 27 versus the run. Furthermore, they had the No. 31 overall ranked defense, according to Pro Football Focus.

Clearly, injuries took a toll this season, but it’s just hard to have a historically bad defensive unit and survive to see another season.

Kiffin popularized the Tampa 2 defensive scheme during his stay with the Buccaneers from 1996-2008 which contributed to Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl victory in 2002.
