Dolphins Officially Sign Ndamukong Suh

Update:

Contract Details:

———–

The Miami Dolphins announced the signing of DT Ndamukong Suh to a six-year contract on Wednesday.

———-

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Miami Dolphins are signing DT Ndamukong Suh to a six-year deal worth around $114 million and includes $60 million guaranteed.

  • Mortensen adds that Suh will receive $60 million in the first three years of the six-year agreement and pay him an average of $19 million per year.

According to the report, the Lions were among other teams making competitive offers to Suh, but the parameters of the Dolphins’ “far exceeded” the rest of the clubs interested in him.

The agreement won’t be official until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

This contract will easily make Suh the highest paid defensive player in the league, besting J.J. Watt‘s eight-year, $108.88 million contract that includes $51.8 million guaranteed.

All indications are that the Dolphins are the team to beat for Suh, so while this is certainly big news, it’s not as surprising as it would have appeared just a few weeks ago.

Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported yesterday that several sources around the NFL had been talking about Suh to the Dolphins “as if it already happened.

The fact that there is no state income tax in Florida will allow Suh to retain several million dollars per year over the course of this agreement, which is a big difference when you consider that state income taxes in other states like California (13.3 percent) and Michigan (4.25 percent).

It will be interesting to see what moves the Dolphins make in the coming days to clear more cap space, so that this massive contract doesn’t weigh down their financial situation too much.

Suh, 27, recorded 51 tackles, 8.5 sacks and three pass defenses for the Lions over the course of 16 games in 2014. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 3 defensive tackle in the league.

We had Suh listed as the No. 1 player in our Top 100 Free Agents List.
