Report: Some NFL Teams Still Think Tony Romo Will Play Again

Mike Freeman of B/R reports that several front office executives have told him that they if they are in a situation where they need a quarterback, the first phone call they will make is to Tony Romo‘s agent.

According to Freeman, most teams still believe Romo will play again and it could actually happen “sooner than later.

After the Cowboys officially moved on from him, Romo agreed to join CBS as a color analyst along with Jim Nantz. However, as soon as Romo agreed to the position, reports mentioned that it was still possible that he could return to the NFL, depending on if the situation were to surface.

Romo has yet to officially file his retirement paperwork with the NFL and danced around questions during interviews after the news surfaced that he was joining CBS.

While teams may have interest in Romo in the event they suffer an injury at quarterback, it’s likely Romo would be very selective about the kind of opportunities he considers. The Cowboys, obviously, would make the most sense if something were to happen to Dak Prescott.

Romo, 37, originally signed on with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois back in 2003. He was entering the fourth year of his seven-year, $119.5 million contract that included $55 million guaranteed set to make a base salar7 of $14 million for the 2017 season when the Cowboys elected to designate him as a post-June 1 release.

Dallas tried to trade Romo to the Broncos and Texans, but no deal surfaced and they ultimately elected to take the $14 million of cap room after June 1.

In 2016, Romo appeared in one game and completed three of four passing attempts for 29 yards and a touchdown for the Cowboys.

We’ll have more regarding Romo as the news is available.
