Report: Packers Considering The Franchise Tag For WR Greg Jennings

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports the Green Bay Packers are actually considering the idea of placing their franchise tag on impending free agent WR Greg Jennings.

Jennings, 29, seemed like an obvious candidate to be playing elsewhere next season, as there hasn’t been any reported communication between the Packers and Jennings’ reps. Then again, it doesn’t require a meeting to franchise a player.

The Packers cleared a lot of cap space in the last few weeks, but it seemed as though they were prepared to use that money to lockup players like Aaron Rodgers, Clay Matthews and B.J. Raji.

A recent report mentioned that Jennings could be targeting as much as $14 million annually in his next contract, which is a clear indication that he won’t be signing a long-term contract with Green Bay if maintains that target. The franchise tag would run them $10.36 million.

We have Jennings listed as the No. 10 best available player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
