Panthers Sign Cam Newton To A Five-Year, $103M Extension

Update:

The Panthers announced the signing of QB Cam Newton to a five-year extension on Tuesday.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Panthers and QB Cam Newton have reached an agreement on a five-year, $103 million contract extension.

  • Rapoport adds that Newton will make $67.6 million in the first three years of his deal, which is the most money ever in a three-year period as part of this contract.
  • The contract also includes $60 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
  • Schefter reports that the contract includes a $22.5 million signing bonus, a $7.5 million roster bonus due on June 6, and $1 million salary for the 2015 season.
  • This means Newton will make $31 million in year one of the agreement.

These numbers are similar to the contract signed by Falcons QB Matt Ryan a few years ago. Ryan walked away with a six-year, $103.75 million contract that included $59 million guaranteed.

Overall, it looks like a very strong deal for the Panthers quarterback.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Panthers and QB Cam Newton are still working to finalize a “mega extension.

Rapoport has been told that Newton will receive a five-year extension worth over $100 million and include $20 – $12 million per year.

Newton will reportedly receive a deal more in line with the contracts signed by quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo, than the deals Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick received last year.

Contract talks reportedly picked up over the weekend after things had been slow moving for some time.

ESPN 730, citing two league sources, is reporting that the Panthers and QB Cam Newton are close to an agreement on a long-term contract extension.

  • According to the report, the contract extension is likely to keep Newton under team control through the 2020 season.
  • Newton is expected to make between $20M – $21M per year as part of this new contract, per ESPN 730.
  • The agreement could be in place as early as today.

There hadn’t been any reported progress towards a long-term agreement before this, and many expected the two sides to wait until Colts and Seahawks locked up Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson respectively before working on an extension of their own.

However, neither Seattle nor Indianapolis are close to reaching an agreement with either player, so the Panthers are likely tired of waiting and ultimately decided to work on a contract of their own for Newton.

The Panthers previously picked up Newton’s fifth-year option last year, which will run them $14.666 million for the 2015 season.

Newton, 25, has thrown for 3,127 yards and completed 58.5 percent of his passes to go along with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions over the course of 14 games. Newton has also contributed 539 yards rushing and five touchdowns on the ground.

Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 8 quarterback in the league out of 39 qualifying players this season.
