Update: Panthers Release Statement Regarding DE Greg Hardy’s Arrest

Update:

Police released a statement regarding Panthers DE Greg Hardy and his recent arrest for domestic violence.

According to the statement, officers responded to a call from a women who said that she had been physically assaulted and threatened by Hardy. The call was reportedly placed at 4:18 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The woman told officers that she and Hardy had been in a relationship since September.

“We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate,” the Panthers said in a statement released on Tuesday, via the Charlotte Observer.

We’ll have to see if this situation leads to a suspension or has any impact on the team’s plans regarding a possible long-term extension in the coming months.

According to WSOCTV in Charlotte, Panthers DE Greg Hardy has been arrested for a domestic violence misdemeanor involving his girlfriend.

Hardy received the Panthers’ franchise tag a few months ago and wasted no time signing the one-year franchise tender worth $13.116 million fully guaranteed.

The two sides are expected to discuss a long-term contract extension in the coming months, but any talks could be tabled until after this situation is sorted out.

Hardy, 25, is widely expected to be targeting massive contract that could come close to Charles Johnson‘s six-year, $78 million deal.

The fact that QB Cam Newton is also in position to secure a long-term contract could complicate the situation some, but it appears as though the Panthers are confident they make the numbers work.

Interestingly enough, the Panthers added some depth at defensive end in the draft when they selected Missouri DL Kony Ealy in the second round, which could be seen as insurance in the event they allow Hardy to sign elsewhere.

Last year, Hardy totaled 59 tackles, 15 sacks and a forced fumble for Carolina.
