Report: Panthers S Charles Godfrey Accepts Pay Cut

ESPN’s Field Yates reports that Panthers S Charles Godfrey has agreed to reduce his salary to be back with the team.

  • According to Yates, Godfrey’s 2014 base salary has been reduced from $5 million to $750,000, but he has an opportunity to earn $1.7 million in per game roster bonuses.
  • Yates adds that the Panthers will free up over $4 million in cap space with this move.

It’s really not all that shocking that Carolina approached Godfrey regarding a pay cut as this idea came up months ago.

Godfrey, 28, suffered a season-ending Achilles injury during the team’s second game of the season, so there is at least some concern about his productivity moving forward.

He wound up appearing in just two games last season and contributed ten tackles and a sack.

It’s worth noting that Pro Football Focus had Godfrey rated as the No. 82 safety out of 88 qualifying players back in 2012.
