Report: Patriots Cannot Franchise CB Darrelle Revis In 2015

Mike Garafolo reports that CB Darrelle Revis‘ new contract with Patriots has a provision that prevents New England from franchising him in 2015 if they decline to pick up his option.

  • Albert Breer reports that the provision was added late last week and the original draft did not include it.
  • The Revis deal became official Monday following an announcement from his agents.

Revis received a two-year contract worth $32 million from the Patriots. However, the second year of the contract is a 2015 club option worth $20 million.

That’s a huge salary for them to take on next year. With this in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the two sides discuss a long-term contract that would offer a much more manageable 2015 salary.

Albert Breer reported a few days ago that the Patriots are open to a long-term deal with Revis at some point, so this could be something to watch over the next year.

Revis, 28, totaled 50 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and two forced fumbles over the the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Revis rated as the No. 1 cornerback in the league last season.
