Report: Patriots Reach An Agreement With CB Aqib Talib

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the New England Patriots have reached a one-year agreement with free agent CB Aqib Talib.

  • Albert Breer reports that Talib’s one-year deal is worth $5 million.
  • Breer adds that New England offered Talib a longer deal, but he elected to take a one-year deal instead. Talib reportedly had interest from 3 other teams, according to Breer.
  • Adam Schefter reports that Washington made a “strong play” for CB Aqib Talib.

Talib is obviously betting on his talent by accepting a one-year contract. Multiple cornerbacks have been forced to take limited contracts this year, so the market is really depressed in terms of the salaries that are being handed out.

Talib was believed to be among the team’s top priorities this offseason, but his market has been surprisingly quiet since free agency opened on Tuesday. The Redskins were reported to have interest in Talib as well, but their cap situation prevented them from aggressively pursuing him and several other cornerback options.

New England signed S Adrian Wilson to a three-year deal and Kyle Arrington to a four-year contract in an attempt to bolster their secondary, but retaining Talib is clearly a big plus.

We had him listed as the No. 5 best available player in our recently updated Top 50 Free Agents list.
