According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, both the Patriots and CB Darrelle Revis are both hoping that they will be able to bring him back for next season.
According to Rapoport, Revis has been exactly the type of player they thought they were getting when they signed him as a free agent last year. Revis is reportedly viewed within the Patriots as the one guy who makes their defense go, so it’s clear that he remains a priority for them this offseason.
Rapoport mentions that the Patriots and Revis are expected to begin long-term extension talks following the Super Bowl.
Sources tell Rapoport, that if the two sides are unable to reach an agreement on a new contract that would keep him in New England for the foreseeable future, the Patriots are not opposed to picking up Revis’ $20 million option for the 2015 season.
Clearly, that wouldn’t be their preference, but they could at least buy themselves some time to work on a long-term contract that comes with a more reasonable salary and cap figure.
Revis, 29, has put together an impressive first year in New England, which could result in another impressive contract for the six-time Pro Bowler.
According to OverTheCap.com, the Patriots will have until the final day of the 2014 league year to exercise his option.
In 2014, Revis recorded 47 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, a recovery and 14 pass defenses over the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Revis rated as the No. 4 cornerback out of 108 qualifying players.
