Peyton Manning To Meet With Broncos Next Week, Despite Report He’s Retiring

Update:

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that while people around the NFL believe Broncos QB Peyton Manning will retire, he has yet to inform the team of any decision.

Peyton’s father, Archie Manning, told Rhett Lewis of NFL Media on Saturday that his son “hasn’t told me a thing” about retiring next week.

Broncos VP of public relations Patrick Smyth announced that Peyton Manning has not made a decision on regarding his future, and instead plans to continue talks with the team this week.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that the Broncos have not been informed of any decision by Peyton Manning to call it a career and retire from the NFL.

According to Florio, the Broncos expect to speak with Manning at some point next week.

Woody Paige of the Denver Post, citing a pair of unnamed sources, is reporting that Broncos QB Peyton Manning will retire and ride off into the sunset following the team’s Super Bowl 50 win.

  • According to Page, Manning is expected to make a formal announcement at some point next week.
  • Page adds that “it’s implausible that Manning would opt to sign with another team for one season.
  • Alex Marvez of FOX Sports is also reporting that the Broncos are proceeding with contract negotiations with other players as though Manning will be retiring from the NFL.

The Broncos said that they were giving Manning all the time he needs in making a decision about his future in the NFL. However, they had to know before the start of free agency in March.

Previous reports have said that Manning could transition to being a front office executive or join an ownership group at some point.

Manning, 39, was entering the final year of his five-year, $96 million contract that includes $18 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $19 million in 2016.

There’s no question that Manning is a first-ballot Hall of Fame selection.

Over the course of his 18-year NFL career, Manning threw for 71,940 yards to go along with 539 touchdowns and 251 interceptions for the Colts and Broncos.

He’s a two-time Super Bowl champion, a five-time MVP, a seven-time All-Pro first-team selection and has won the Offensive Player of the Year award twice and the Comeback Player of the Year award.

We’ll have more updates regarding Manning as the news is available.
