Report: Rams Have Contacted Giants About Odell Beckham Jr

Multiple NFL sources have told Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News that the Rams have already contacted the Giants about a potential trade for WR Odell Beckham Jr.

According to Leonard, a Rams executive declined to comment when asked if they had contacted the Giants about Beckham, but “flashed a wry smile and didn’t deny it.

“Where did you hear that?” the Rams exec said to Leonard.

  • Leonard reported earlier in the day that the Giants are “officially open to fielding offers” for Beckham Jr. and are looking for “first-round pick plus” in return for him. Leonard added that the “plus” part is negotiable and means it won’t require two first-round picks to get a deal done.
  • However, a source tells Newsday that the Giants’ main objective in regards Beckham Jr is to negotiate a long-term deal to keep him in New York long term.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media mentioned Monday morning that the Giants are open to discussing a potential trade involving Beckham Jr. for the right price.

Rapoport makes it clear that the Giants are not shopping Beckham Jr. around the league in trade talks, but from the recent comments made by owner John Mara, it’s clear that New York is at least willing to listen to potential opportunities for their star receiver.

According to Rapoport, it would obviously take a lot for the Giants to part with Beckham Jr. and complicating matters more is the fact that he is going to want a massive contract extension that will make him the highest-paid receiver in the NFL.

Rapoport also reported that Giants Beckham Jr. will not suit up for the Giants or any other team this year without a new long-term deal in place.

“Odell Beckham is not going to set foot on the field without a new contract agreed to, whether the Giants or whether anyone else,” Rapoport said.

On Sunday, Mara told reporters that no player is “untouchable” in a trade for them after a disappointing season.

“I can’t answer that one way or the other,” Mara said when asked if he could see a scenario in which Beckham isn’t with the Giants in 2018. “I mean we’re certainly not shopping him, if that’s what you’re asking (laughs). But when you’re coming off a season where you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say anyone’s untouchable.

Mara did, however, add that trading Beckham is “not a scenario I would like to see happen.”

Last we heard regarding Beckman and an extension, Mike Garafolo reported that Beckham has told some people that he’s seeking as much as $20 million per year as part of a long-term commitment.

Beckham, 25, was taken with the No. 12 overall pick by the Giants back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $10,406,198 contract but the Giants picked up his fifth-year option last year.

Beckham stands to make a base salary of $8,459,000 for the 2018 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Beckham would free up $8,459,000 of available cap space while creating no dead money.

In 2017, Beckham Jr’s season was cut short when he suffered a season-ending injury. He caught 25 passes for 302 yards receiving and three touchdowns over the course of four games.

We’ll have more regarding a new deal for Beckham as the news is available.
