Update:

The Washington Redskins made it official by announcing that they’ve fired DC Joe Barry, strength coach Mike Clark, DBs coach Perry Fewell and DL coach Robb Akey.

Jason La Canfora reports that Redskins HC Jay Gruden is parting ways with his entire defensive coaching staff and starting over on that side of the ball.

  • Mike Jones has confirmed that the Redskins have fired DC Joe Barry and his assistants.
  • Jones reports that the Redskins have also fired strength coach Mike Clark.

There has been some talk that changes could be coming to the Redskins’ defense for the 2017 season, so this doesn’t exactly come out of nowhere.

One notable free agent defensive coordinator worth monitoring for Washington is Wade Phillips, who runs a 3-4 defense and could be a good fit with the Redskins, assuming he doesn’t re-sign with the Broncos.

The Redskins hired Joe Barry as their defensive coordinator in 2015 after he had spent four years working for the Chargers as their linebackers coach.

In 2016, the Redskins were No. 18 points allowed, No. 3 total yards allowed, No. 21 rushing yards allowed and No. 2 passing yards allowed.

We’ll have more regarding the specific changes being made by the Redskins as the news is available.
