Rodger Saffold Fails Physical, Not Signing With The Raiders

The Oakland Raiders announced that OL Rodger Saffold failed his physical and his contract has been voided.

He’s now a free agent.

  • Mike Silver, citing a Raiders source, reports that Raiders owner Mark Davis “pulled the plug” on the deal with Saffold.
  • Saffold reportedly could have had surgery and been ready for training camp, but Davis said no.
  • The Raiders had signed Saffold to a five-year, $42.5 million contract that included $21 million guaranteed before the deal was voided.

The Raiders reportedly allowed LT Jared Veldheer to sign with the Cardinals because they felt like Saffold could play left tackle for them. A number of people around the league expressed concern about the idea, but they seemed to really like him.

Saffold hasn’t played a full season since his firs year in the league, so the Raiders had to know that there could be some concerns about his physical condition.

This leaves the Raiders in an extremely tough spot as there aren’t many left tackle options still available on the open market. Bengals free agent Anthony Collins is the best available left tackles right now, but he’s reportedly deep in talks with the Buccaneers.

It could be costly to get involved in talks with Collins, so we’ll have to see what the Raiders elect to do in the coming days.
