Pro Football Talk is reporting that Saints LB Will Smith is expected to be out for the entire 2013 season after he suffered a knee injury against the Texans.
The Saints asked Smith to change his position from defensive end to outside linebacker this season as they move to a 3-4 base defense. Smith reportedly dropped weight to make the transition.
Smith, 32, is under contract through the 2014 season, but it is a candidate for release next offseason. He stands to make $10.4 million next year and has a $1 million roster bonus. If the Saints intend to stick with the 3-4 defense, there’s almost no way he’s brought back given the knee injury, total salary and his overall fit in their defensive scheme.
