Seahawks Sign CB Richard Sherman To An Extension

Update:

Richard Sherman announced via his website that his new contract is a four-year extension worth $57.4 million in total and $40 million guaranteed.

“I am blessed to announce that the Seattle Seahawks and I have reached an agreement on a contract extension. The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks. With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important – defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL.

Assuming the figures are accurate, Sherman would receive $14 million per year over the course of the four years added to his current contract.

His total contract would come out to $58.831 million with an average salary of around $11.766 million.

Sherman, 25, was entering the final year of his rookie contract and is clearly in the argument for the best cornerback in the league. He would have made just $1.389 million for the 2014 season.

Last year, Sherman appeared in all 16 games and totaled 49 tackles, eight interceptions — one of which was returned for a touchdown — and 16 pass defenses.

Pro Football Focus has Sherman rated as the No. 6 cornerback in the league last season.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that the Seattle Seahawks are finishing up a new contract extension for CB Richard Sherman.

Glazer adds that Sherman receives a four-year contract that will make him the highest paid cornerback in the NFL.

  • Tom Pelissero of USA Today spoke with Sherman earlier in the day who mentioned that a deal could be in place before the draft.
  • Sherman added that it’s a “very nice deal.
  • The Seahawks have already scheduled a press conference for today, according to Ian Rapoport.

Sherman’s new contract is expected to pay him in excess of $12 million, according to previous reports, but we’ll have to see what the specifics are once they’re available.
