Antoine Winfield Retires From The NFL

Update:

Jay Glazer reports that veteran CB Antoine Winfield has informed the Seahawks that he intends to retire from the NFL.

Reports from earlier in the day suggested that Winfield was likely to be cut loose by Seattle before today’s deadline.

Winfield was a three time Pro Bowl selection who played his best years for the Minnesota Vikings. Despite his age, Winfield put together a heck of 2012 season and has had a very solid career in the NFL.

Jason La Canfora of ESPN reports that the Seahawks are preparing to release veteran CB Antoine Winfield.

The Seahawks have made a name for themselves as they strictly abide by their “best-player-plays” mentality, which appears to put Winfield out of sorts with a team with a very deep depth at cornerback.

Both Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman are unmovable starters, while both Walter Thurmond III and Jeremy Lane are viewed as prospects with a bright future, leaving Winfield as expandable.

The team will opt to try and deal Winfield first, considering the interest shown by both the Redskins and Vikings in the offseason.
