Texans View Blake Bortles As The No. 1 QB Prospect?

Tony Pauline of Draftinsider.net reports that sources believe Houston Texans HC Bill O’Brien would take UCF QB Blake Bortles with the No. 1 overall draft pick if it was his decision to make.

  • Pauline adds that another possibility would be drafting LSU QB Zach Mettenberger in the second round and using their No. 1 pick on someone else.

Pauline has been a big proponent of Bortles going No. 1 overall for a few weeks now, and even has the Texans taking him in his recent Mock Draft.

Bortles is a bit of confusing prospect considering that reports regarding his draft stock have been all over the place since the college season has come to a close.

  • Adam Caplan reported last week that teams are currently “all over the place” with regards to Bortles.
  • Meanwhile, Bears director of college scouting Greg Gabriel told the National Football Post that he would take six quarterbacks over Bortles at this point in the process.

Of course, a strong combine performance could help Bortles’ prospects of securing the top overall selection in May’s draft.

Texans owner Bob McNair recently referred to South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney as a remarkable player” in a recent interview, so there is always a chance they could go with Clowney and pair him with J.J. Watt while addressing the quarterback position in round two.

Others still believe Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater is the top quarterback prospect in the draft. There is obviously a lot of smoke starting to build at this point in year, so we’ll have to see how things play out in the coming weeks before we have a better idea where things stand with these quarterback prospects.
