Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that Texans HC Bill O’Brien has interest in University of Maryland head-coaching job.

According to La Canfora, prominent Maryland alumnus are aware of O’Brien’s interest in the position, and it’s clear to many within the Texans’ organization that “significant change.

La Canfora anticipates major changes to their power structure with O’Brien and Smith unlikely to remain in the current roles.

Chargers OC Frank Reich is reportedly interested in the Maryland job, and viewed as an “elite candidate.”

It would be surprising to see O’Brien walk away from an NFL head-coaching job after just a few years with the team. After all, O’Brien left another Big Ten school — Penn State — to take the Texans job last year.

There were previous reports of a power struggle between O’Brien and GM Rick Smith. However, Texans owner Bob McNair disputed the notion that the two men can’t work together.

“I don’t know where those reports came from,” McNair said, via the Houston Chronicle. “They’re totally inaccurate. There’s nothing to it. They work well together. If they disagree on something they come to me. They’ve never come to me.

“I don’t like to have these anonymous sources, people saying something and they don’t know what they’re talking about. That bothers me. I don’t like it.

“We’ve got a good organization. People work hard. They’re going to continue to work hard, and we’re going to get good results.”

Since taking the job last year, O’Brien has led the Texans to a record of 12-12, which included a winnig record in his first year.

We’ll have more regarding O’Brien’s future as the news is available.
