Report: Texans Placing RB Ben Tate On Season-Ending IR

Josina Anderson reports that a source has informed her that the Houston Texans will place RB Ben Tate season-ending injured reserve Wednesday.

  • Interim HC Wade Phillips mentioned that the decision to place Tate on injured reserve came after he broke a fifth rib, per Tania Ganguli.

Ian Rapoport reported earlier on Wednesday that the Texans signed RB Jonathan Grimes, which was an indication that a roster move regarding a running back was coming.

Tate, 25, has been playing through a number of cracked ribs this season, which is somewhat remarkable by itself. With the Texans currently on pace to wrap up the No. 1 overall pick, it makes little sense to keep trotting Tate out there with so little to play for.

Tate is in the final year of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent in the coming months. It’s hard to say what kind of market he’ll have this offseason given that running backs continue to fare poorly during free agency, but there is no question that he is one of the best available backs.

We have Tate listed as the No. 43 player in our Top 50 – 2014 Free Agents list.
