John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans will in fact be releasing veteran S Ed Reed on Tuesday.

Reed, 35, signed a three-year contract worth $15 million and included $6 million guaranteed with the Texans back in March. He was recently demoted to the No. 3 safety and playing only in dime packages, which resulted in him playing just 12 snaps against the Cardinals in Week 11.

  • Reed will need to pass through waivers before he can sign with a team of his choosing, but it’s very unlikely that he will be claimed.
  • According to Overthecap.com, Reed will carry a cap charge of $5.333 million in 2014, but they will also free up $2.666 million in salary cap space with this move.

Reed told reporters following the game that the Texans were both “outplayed” and “outcoached,” which probably didn’t help of his chances of remaining with the team.

The Texans got only 16 tackles for their $6 million guaranteed. It’s also worth noting that they lost all seven of the games Reed appeared in this season.
