Report: Titans Fire HC Mike Munchak

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Tennessee Titans have elected to fire head coach Mike Munchak.

  • Jim Wyatt reports that Munchak was offered an opportunity to return for another season if he agreed to specific conditions.
    • Wyatt adds that the Titans were going to “make it very difficult on [Munchak]” if he agreed to return.
    • The Titans reportedly were going to force Munchak to part with DC Jerry Gray, OC Dowell Loggains, OL coach Bruce Matthews and LB coach Chet Parlavecchio, according to Wyatt.
  • Ian Rapoport reports that Muchak was not willing to make staff changes.
  • Jason La Canfora reports that Titans coaching staff still hasn’t been told if they will be retained.
  • One speculative name to watch with regards to this opening is Vanderbilt HC James Franklin who appears to be a hot coaching candidate.

The Titans GM Ruston Webster  released a statement regarding the decision to fire Munchak.

“First I want to thank Mike Munchak for his professionalism through this process and thank him for his years of dedication to the Titans/Oilers organization. He is first-class and I wish him and his family nothing but the best. I also want to praise Tommy Smith for his involvement during the weeklong process. He was thorough and thoughtful.

The last week has been a difficult time trying to navigate through many issues to find the best resolution for this franchise moving forward. Tough choices were presented to all sides and the end result was to part ways and move forward without Mike.

We will immediately begin a search for a new head coach.”
I am confident that we will find a coach that can continue our growth as a team and lead us to sustained success.”

Reports from Friday suggested that Munchak was likely to be brought back next year, despite posting another disappointing season in 2013.

Titans president /CEO Tommy Smith met with Munchak and team GM Ruston Webster in Houston yesterday, but wouldn’t say if changes were coming.

Munchak took over for long-time HC Jeff Fisher who was fired in 2011. In three seasons with the team, Munchak led the Titans to a record of 22-26 (.458). According to ESPN Stats & Info, Munchak has a 2-20 record against teams with a winning record.
