Report: Titans Have No Plans To Use Their Franchise Tag

According to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, “indications” are that the Titans have no plans to use their franchise tag on any of their free agents next week.

The only candidate who really makes for the franchise tag would be CB Alterraun Verner who is coming off of a Pro Bowl season for the Titans. However, it would cost Tennessee close to $11 million next year and Wyatt mentions that this is concern given that they are already paying CB Jason McCourty an average of $8.608 million annually.

Wyatt rules out the idea of tagging veteran S Bernard Pollard, even though he believes the Titans are interested in re-signing him.

Yesterday, Wyatt mentioned that the Titans are likely to have a hard time preventing Verner from testing the open market this March.

Verner, 25, is in great position to secure a solid contract on the open market. He finished the year with 57 tackles, five interceptions including one for a touchdown, two fumble recoveries and 23 passes defensed.

Pro Football Focus has Verner rated as the No. 12 cornerback in the league this season. We have him listed as the No. 6 player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
