Titans Sign DL Ropati Pitoitua To A Three-Year Contract

Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean reports that the Titans have come to a three-year deal with DL Ropati Pitoitua, according to sources.

  • Aaron Wilson reports that Pitoitua receives base salaries: $975,000 (2014), $2.125 million (2015), and $2.95 million (2016).
    • Wilson adds that Pitoitua’s contract includes a $600,000 roster bonus due in March of 2015.
  • Mike Garfolo reports that Pitoitua’s three-year deal is worth $9.6 million and includes $2.175 million to sign.

Pitoitua broke into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Washington State with the New York Jets in 2008.  He played with the Chiefs in 2012, before signing a one-year deal with Tennessee.

Pitoitua, 28, is a rare player, as he stands 6’8 weighing 298 pounds.  He is not a pass-rushing threat, registering 7 sacks throughout his career with four coming last season, but he is stout against the run and can be moved around in Ray Horton‘s hybrid defense.

The Titans will still pursue pass-rushers, most likely pass-rushing outside linebackers.  They do have nearly $11 million in estimated cap space according to overthecap.com.

Pro Football Focus ranked Pitoitua 22nd in their 4-3 defensive end rankings for the 2013 season.
