Report: Several Contenders Showing Interest In Veteran CB Antoine Winfield

Update:

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that “several contending teams” have been in regular contact with veteran CB Antoine Winfield.

  • La Canfora mentions that Winfield would like to play for a contender, but the Vikings have been in contact with him in recent weeks.
  • La Canfora adds that several teams have asked that Winfield not sign a contract without giving them a chance to match the offer.

Josina Anderson reports that veteran and former Vikings CB Antoine Winfield is working out in Houston and is considering a return to the NFL in the “right situation.

Last we heard, Winfield had yet to file his retirement papers, so the door has been open for him to play again.

Winfield, 36, was released by Minnesota months ago, but landed with the Seattle Seahawks only to be released again. Winfield reportedly informed the Seahawks that he intended to retire.

While he was able to put together a very strong season for the Vikings in 2012, it’s hard to say whether or not he could produce at that level again. Minnesota wasn’t willing to close to the door on bringing Winfield back at some point, and they probably make the most sense given his experience with their defensive scheme.
