Cardinals Sign Veteran DT Tommy Kelly, Cut DE Ryan McBean

Update:

Jason La Canfora reports that the Cardinals are in fact signing veteran DT Tommy Kelly to a contract.

  • ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirms the move and adds that Kelly will receive a one-year contract from Arizona.
  • Darren Urban reports that the Cardinals have released DE Ryan McBean to make room for Kelly.

McBean, 30, signed a contract with Arizona a week ago following the injury to DL Darnell Dockett, but it appears as though the Cardinals preferred to move in a different direction.

McBean is a former fourth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He spent two years with the Steelers before signing on to the Broncos’ practice squad in 2008. McBean later sign with the Ravens, but hasn’t appeared in an NFL game since 2011.

Mike Garafolo reports that a deal between the Cardinals and veteran DT Tommy Kelly could get done soon.

  • Garafolo adds that the meeting is reportedly “going well.”
  • Kent Somers of AzCentral.com first reported that Kelly was visiting with the Cardinals Monday night and into Tuesday.

The Cardinals have been very active in trying to find veteran help at defensive line after they lost DL Darnell Dockett for the season due to an ACL injury.

Arizona has already signed Isaac Sopoaga and Ryan McBean, so it will be interesting to see if they give Kelly an extended look.

Kelly, 33, was forced to restructure his contract back in May in order to remain with the Patriots, but they wound up releasing him in their first round of roster cuts on Sunday.

Last year, Kelly appeared in five games for the Patriots and recorded 22 tackles, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
