Vikings Re-Sign QB Matt Cassel To A Two-Year Contract

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that the Vikings are re-signing QB Matt Cassel.

  • Rapoport adds that the Vikings are giving Cassel a two-year contract.
  • Jason La Canfora is “hearing” that Cassel’s deal is worth $10 million over two years.
    • La Canfora adds that the Texans were a possible landing spot for him had he not re-upped with Minnesota.

For the sake of comparison, and assuming La Canfora’s contract info is accurate, Chad Henne signed a two-year contract worth $8 million and included $4.5 million guaranteed.

  • We’re still waiting to here what the guaranteed figure is in Cassel’s deal.

Cassel’s name came up as a speculative options for teams in need of a backup quarterback like the Texans, Buccaneers and Raiders, but it appears as though the Vikings made a compelling case for him to return.

Cassel has maintained that he wants an opportunity to start next year, so this could be an indication that Minnesota is prepared to part ways with Christian Ponder.

I would love to have Matt Cassel back, if Matt Cassel wants to be back.” new HC Mike Zimmer stated, per Tom Pelissero. “I don’t know if that will happen.

Last season, Cassel completed over 60 percent of his passing attempts for 1,807 yards to go along with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

We had Cassel listed as the No. 98 player in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
