Report: Vince Wilfork Asks Patriots For Release

Ian Rapoport reports that veteran NT Vince Wilfork has asked that the Patriots to release him after 10 seasons with the team.

  • Albert Breer of the NFL Network reported on Wednesday that the Patriots and Wilfork had discussed a contract extension during the offseason.
  • Breer adds that the two sides hadn’t talked to one another in recent days.
  • Rapoport mentions that the Patriots approached Wilfork about a restructured deal that would make him a “non-starter.”

It appeared as though the Patriots could workout a short-extension, however, they were probably unwilling to offer him the same salary moving forward.

Wilfork, 32, is coming off of an Achilles’ injury and is entering the final year of his five-year, $40 million contract that included $25 million guaranteed.

His cap figure for the 2014 season sits at $11.6 million, and New England would free up $8 million in cap space by releasing, according to OverTheCap.com.
