Report: Anthony Spencer Will Play Under 2013 Franchise Tag

Calvin Watkins of ESPN Dallas wrote Monday afternoon a source informs him that Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer will play his 2013 season as a franchised defensive end, ending the possibility of a long-term contract for the moment.

Entering his final season before the age of 30, Spencer will make $10.6 million with the Cowboys.

Talks between Dallas and Spencer’s agent, Jordan Woy, broke off in late June. The two sides weren’t able to meet in the middle, so the franchise tag will have to be invoked.

It’s worth noting his tag as a defensive end pays roughly 25% more than the tag for a defensive tackle. Earlier Monday, it was reported the Bears and defensive tackle Henry Melton were going to use the franchise tag salary for 2013, which was $8.45 million. Because of the importance of good defensive ends, his value is a good chunk more than if he was an interior lineman.
