Representatives For Drew Brees Were Eyeing Cardinals As Potential Option Before Extension, Jets Also Interested

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports the representatives for Saints QB Drew Brees began mulling potential suitors for him in 2017, as they hadn’t made much progress on a contract extension until this past week.

According to La Canfora, the Cardinals were at the top of their list before Arizona signed Carson Palmer to an extension. La Canfora mentions that the Jets would have been willing to explore a deal with Brees if he wound up testing the open market.

Meanwhile, other GMs La Canfora spoke to identified the Dolphins and Broncos as potential landing spots for Brees, depending on how their current quarterbacks developed.

All of this no longer applies with Brees signing a one-year extension worth $24.25 million. Of course, it’s possible that these teams could begin to show interest in Brees a year from now, as he’ll once again be entering the final year of his contract.

Brees, 37, had one year remaining on his five-year, $100 million contract that included $40 million guaranteed. He was set to make a base salary of $19.75 million of in 2016.

In 2015, Brees has thrown for 4,870 yards while completing 68.3 percent of his passes to go along with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions over the course of 15 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 6 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
