Rex Ryan: Jets Not Close to Naming Starting QB

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that the Jets are not close to naming a starting quarterback just yet.

“I don’t believe we’re close to that right now,” Ryan told the media after practice Wednesday. “Obviously, we don’t have to make that move right now. Until we feel 100 percent comfortable with that decision, we’ll leave it to competition.”

The open competition between Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith is a decision that Ryan stated he doesn’t feel has to be made sooner than later, but rather when there’s a clear front-runner.

“It’s way too early,” Ryan said. “Some days this guy looks good, some days that guy looks good.”

And in the event that it’s neck-and-neck for a while longer still?

“For me to make the decision, to say the competition is over, it will have to be 100 percent clear,” Ryan said. “If it’s not, we’re going to keep competing until it’s clear.”
