Rex Ryan Pondered The Idea Of Trading For Geno Smith After Taking Bills’ Job

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Bills HC Rex Ryan wondered out loud to friends whether the Jets would be open to trading starting QB Geno Smith.

  • Mehta mentions that Ryan alway believed in Smith despite his flaws as a quarterback.

Of course, the Bills elected to trade for Matt Cassel instead and brought in Tyrod Taylor to compete with him and former first-round pick EJ Manuel for the starting job.

As of now, Cassel will be given the first opportunity to secure the job, but it’s hard to say that he really has an edge over Taylor. Manuel continues to struggle this summer and appears to be the No. 3 option, barring a solid showing in the preseason.

Smith wound up sustaining a broken jaw after LB IK Enemkpali punched him over $600 he was owed from a plane ticket he had purchased for Smith to attend his kids camp.

Interestingly enough, the Bills wound up claiming Enemkpali off of waivers on Wednesday.

Josina Anderson reported earlier this morning that Smith has elected to undergo surgery on his broken jaw.

Smith, 24, is entering his third season with the Jets and was in line for a make-or-break situation. However, we may not see him appear in a game until midway through the season.

Last year, Smith appeared in 14 games and threw for 2,525 and completed 59.7 percent of his passes to go along with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
