Rey Maualuga An Option For The Ravens?

Peter King of Sports Illustrated speculates that the Baltimore Ravens could target LB Rey Maualuga after theĀ “initial rush” of free agency.

King adds that the Ravens were believed to be high on Maualuga heading into the 2009 NFL Draft.

Considering that they could use some extra depth at inside linebacker now thatĀ Ray LewisĀ is set to retire, this couldĀ actually be an option for them, assuming of course that they have the cap space to signĀ Maualuga.

King mentions that it’s imperative that the Ravens retain LBĀ Dannell Ellerbe, who will be an unrestricted free agent as well.

Maualuga, 26, was rated as the worst qualifying inside linebacker in 2012 by Pro Football Focus. Clearly, Maualuga hasn’t lived to the expectations that many had for him coming out of USC. He’s been exceptionally poor in coverage, but at least serviceable against the run.

It’s hard to say what kind of market there will be for his services, but he’ll at least be an interesting name to follow come March.
