Rey Maualuga Future With Bengals In Doubt?

Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer believes that free agent MLB Rey Maualuga will not be back with Bengals in 2013.

Reedy admits that the team could always change their mind, but doubts that Maualuga will be back next season.

Maualuga, 25, will be an unrestricted free agent, but his four years with the team hasn’t lived up to peoples’ expectations. In fact, Pro Football Focus rated Maualuga last among qualifying inside linebackers this season and his 2011 rating wasn’t much better.

Despite having played in all regular season games this year and producing a career high 122 tackles, Maualuga experienced his share of missed tackles and struggled mightily in passing coverage. But  perhaps the biggest issue for the former second round pick was the fact that he was outperformed by undrafted rookie Vontaze Burfict.

Maualuga’s young enough to find work elsewhere, but it’s hard to imagine him securing a solid contract on the open market. We have him listed as the No. 92 best available player in our Top 100 Free Agents list.
