Richard Sherman May Not Need Tommy John Surgery

Seahawks HC Pete Carroll said during an interview Tuesday with 710 ESPN in Seattle that he “might have been misled” earlier this week when he told reporters that CB Richard Sherman may need Tommy John surgery on his injured elbow.

“He’s not a pitcher, and he’s not a left-hander. Sherm might not have to have that kind of surgery,” Carroll said. “If he was a thrower he would.”

According to Mike Garafolo, Sherman was dealing with a nerve issue in his elbow after NFC Championship game.

Garafolo adds that any surgical procedure is likely to be similar to the one DeMarcus Ware underwent last year.

It was clear that Lane’s injury was serious after images of his injury began circulating online following his interception.

• ESPN’s John Clayton reported earlier in the day that Tommy John surgery was a possibility for Sherman.
• Ian Rapoport reports Seahawks FS Earl Thomas is expected to undergo surgery on his injured shoulder.

The procedure involves using a tendon from elsewhere in the body to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL).

Sherman, 26, will be entering the second year of his five-year, $58.789 million contract that included $40 million guaranteed. He has base salaries of $10 million (2015), $12.569 million (2016), $11.431 million (2017), and $11 million (2018) coming is way over the remainder of the agreement.

In 2014, Sherman appeared in all 16 games and recorded 57 tackles, four interceptions, one forced fumble and eight pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 3 cornerback in the league.
