Jets Have No Interest In Signing Ryan Fitzpatrick To A One-Year, $12M Deal

Update:

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets are not interested in signing QB Ryan Fitzpatrick a one-year, $12 million contract, despite the previous report.

  • Mehta adds that this “will not be happening.
  • Albert Breer says that if there’s a compromise to be made between the two parties on a one-year deal, it could break down to an $8 million base salary with incentives that could push the deal up to $12 million or more with incentives.

Gary Myers of the New York Daily News reports that free agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is willing to accept a one-year contract from the Jets worth $12 million guaranteed.

The Jets are reportedly offering Fitzpatrick a three-year, $24 million contract with $12 million being paid out in year one, so this would be in line with the deal that’s been on the table for months. However, it would drop the final two years of the deal that would have paid him at an elite backup rate of $6 million per year.

While this seems like a compromise, Myers adds that the Jets are being stubborn and have not indicated they are willing to sign Fitzpatrick to just a one-year deal, even though it would be the same pay in year one.

According to Myers, Fitzpatrick has given up on idea of securing a multi-year contract that would pay him as a starter, but the Jets have maintained that they want him on a three-year deal with a drastically reduced salary after 2016.

Myers mentions that there have been no negotiations between the two parties for months now. There have, however, been some talks with no contract figures being exchanged, according to Myers.

Myers’ source explained the situation as “double jeopardy” for Fitzpatrick.

“Fitz is stuck,” said Myers’ source. “The Jets are stuck losing games without him. They need a quarterback. A one-year deal is the answer. The Jets are making this a circus. They’re wrong on this one.

Fitzpatrick, 32, played out the final year of his two-year, $7.5 million contract that included $4 million guaranteed and is currently the best quarterback still available in this year’s market.

In 2015, Fitzpatrick threw for 3,905 yards while completing 59.6 percent of his passes to go along with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has Fitzpatrick rated as the No. 27 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.
