Ryan Mathews Didn’t Start Due To His Fumble In Week 3

Due to a fumble in Week 3’s game against the Falcons, Chargers head coach Norv Turner wanted to ease running back Ryan Mathews back into action during Sunday’s 37-20 victory over the Chiefs, per Michael Gehlken of the Union-Tribune San Diego.

“He understands the importance of taking care of the ball,” Turner said, via Gehlken. “He’s not negligent. I don’t think there’s anyone that works any harder. He had a bad play in the Atlanta game, and I do believe that we’re going to get past that.”

Jackie Battle started on Sunday. He played 27 offensive snaps, compared to Mathews’ 21, with 15 carries for 39 yards and a team-high four catches for 42 yards. Battle also found the end-zone twice on Sunday with both a rushing and receiving touchdown. Battle shouldn’t be starting for the Chargers too much longer, as it’s really only a matter of time before Mathews is handling the majority of the workload.
